Hundreds gather for Krishna Janmashtami celebration in Newbury
Newbury’s Indian community gathered earlier this month to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami, a Hindu festivity marking Lord Sri Krishna's first appearance on earth.
Around 250 people attended the event at the Riverside Community Centre in Turnpike on Sunday, September 10.
The colourful celebration featured traditional dance performances, dramatic enactments of Krishna's life and vibrant cultural presentations.
The festivities began with collective chanting and meditation.
Following the chants, rhythmic kirtan (devotional congregational singing) made everyone visualise the enchanting world of Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna spent his childhood.
Sanjeev Agarwala attended the event and said: “Krishna Janmashtami, a sacred celebration marking Lord Sri Krishna's appearance on this planet, goes beyond festivity, forging a profound connection cherished by millions of global devotees.
“This festival also signifies unity and faith in Dharma (duty and righteousness).
“No Janmashtami celebration is complete without the delightful prasadam (sanctified food), which fills devotees' hearts and bellies with unity and communal harmony.
“As we tread the path of righteousness guided by lord teachings, may eternal joy, peace, and love fill our hearts.
“Let Krishna Janmashtami's spirit inspire us to live lives brimming with love, compassion, unwavering devotion and prosperity.”
