Hundreds gather in Market Place for Pancake race
NEWBURY went flipping mad this lunchtime (Tues) as the annual Pancake Day race once again graced the Market Place.
Organised by Soroptomist International Newbury and District, the event attracted hundreds of spectators and saw teams from local businesses, organisations and groups go head to head to be crowned winners in one of three categories.
This year’s Pancake champions, sponsored by the Newbury Weekly News, were the Newbury Building Society.
The best dressed team, sponsored by Henwick Properties, went to the Newbury Weekly News’ team of dinosaurs.
The pancake tosser of the year, sponsored by Gecko Communications, went to John Aldis of St Nicolas Church.
Pancake lunches were then served from 12.15pm in St Nicolas Hall.
Sylvia Grimwood, 78, spent two weeks making the 480 pancakes required to feed Newbury residents.
She said: “I love it, I’ve been doing it for over 20 years now and it’s wonderful to see everyone together.”
