Hundreds turn-out to celebrate Apple Day
Last year’s event proved so popular that organisers decided to come back for a second bite and this year’s fruity extravaganza proved to be even more of a success, with an abundance of apples of all shapes and varieties being brought along to be pressed into juice.
Two hand presses worked all day to produce fresh juice, with apples being delivered in bags and shopping trolleys from gardens and orchards in and around Newbury.
Guests had the chance to celebrate the fruit in a whole host of ways, with apple cakes and goodies available to buy, an opportunity to have a taste of unusual heritage varieties and to find out more about the town’s very own apple varieties.
Apple-based competitions and other events were also set up to entertain the younger guests on the day.
One of the event organisers, Beverley Lewis, said: “We were delighted to see so many people come along. This year’s good apple harvest meant that there was plenty of fruit. We welcomed families and it was fantastic to see children being able to taste juice from the apples grown in their own gardens.
“They enjoyed getting involved, and were fascinated to see how juice could be made from fruit.”
Experts were also on hand to help identify apple varieties, and to talk about Newbury’s three community orchards.
