Hungerford canal boat destroyed in fire




Firefighters from 4 local fire stations at scene

A CANAL boat was destroyed in a Hungerford blaze on the Kennet and Avon canal yesterday evening (Tues).

According to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) three pumps from Newbury, Hungerford and Wantage, together with the water rescue unit from Caversham Road, Reading were called at 9.51pm to The Croft, where a canal boat was ablaze.

No-one was hurt.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a main jet and hydrant.

The canal boat was 90 per cent destroyed in the incident.

The fire service did not have any details as to the cause.

Fire crews left the scene at 12.46am.

A re-inspection was carried out at 8.07am today (Wed), when crews used a water jet to damp down at the scene.
