Hungerford man establishes charity for Sierra Leone school
Fitness instructor, Bee Jacks, (pictured right - front) who lives in Hungerford and teaches at Hungerford and Herongate Leisure centres, Energie Fitness, Greenacre Leisure, the Donnington Valley Hotel, Newbury and Parkwood Leisure, Lambourn, has been raising funds over the last year to build a school in Sierra Leone.
The initiative recently gathered pace, after several of his pupils volunteered their services for the newly formed, Beejacks Tombo Foundation.
This charitable trust is in aid of the 300-pupil, Honor Services Community Primary School, situated in a coastal fishing village about 30 miles from the capital of Freetown - where Bee Jacks was born.
The existing school structure is made of just polythene and sticks (pitured) and the charity has set a £5,000 target to purchase the materials to construct a new school building - with local villagers in Sierra Leone to provide the labour, under supervision.
Sierra Leone is still recovering from a civil war which ended in 2002, with many children denied a basic education, whose parents cannot afford school fees:
“The schools themselves are desperately in need of funding, with some barely having adequate buildings, fresh drinking water or the simplest of learning materials,” said Bee Jacks, who last year raised £1,500 for school desks and chairs at the school, for children aged five to 12.
Trustee, John Willmott, of Hungerford, said 100 per cent of any donation would go to the trust’s funds:
“Unlike many charities, we have no administration costs,” said Mr Willmott.
“This trust will have no overheads and everyone involved is giving of their time free of charge, as is Bee Jacks.”
With funds raised currently standing at £1,750, to boost this amount, Bee Jacks - so named because of fame he achieved in Sierra Leone for dancing like Michael Jackson, real name Alhaji Momodu Alpha Bah - is hoping for lots of support at a Zumba dance/fitness evening in aid of the charity in Hungerford.
The Zumba evening is from 7pm to 11.30pm this evening (Friday July 5), at Herongate Leisure Centre, cost £5, tickets from Beejacks, for more information/contact details visit www.Beejacks.co.uk.
