Hunt for the balloon that fell to Earth
Sixth-form students at Queen Mary's Grammar School launched a camera attached to the helium balloon dubbed 'Horizon' on February 9.
The balloon soared to a height of 21 miles and the school was tracking the balloon via Global Positioning Satellites, which showed its last location as Old Basing in Hampshire.
However, when the tracking team arrived at the coordinates, the balloon was not there and a smart phone tracking device later picked up the signal at a mobile phone mast in Tilehurst – at Little Heath Road to be precise.
Unfortunately the team had to abandon the search due to poor light but maths teacher Adam Coghlan is urging anybody with information about Horizon to contact the school or the police.
He said: “The photos are the most valuable asset as they are the culmination of the student's work over the last year."
Mr Coghlan said the balloon did have a sign with the schools contact details on it but this may have come off during the journey.
The camera was in a box with a notice saying 'harmless science experiment' attached to it with a luminous green and orange parachute.
