Overflowing bins in Newbury – public told ‘take your rubbish home’
Take it home or find another bin – that’s the response to the public from West Berkshire Council about over flowing rubbish and dog waste.
Overflowing bins have had Newbury residents up in arms as rubbish has been spilling out over Northcroft Road.
One resident says she has been clearing up the mess herself.
“I have been emptying it now over a three-week period,” she said last week.
“I walked past it again yesterday [Sunday] and it is full again. You will see the three bags I have put there previously.
“I have complained by email and two phone calls to WBC.
“Rats have now nibbled the bags on the floor.
“It is my understanding that as a rule WBC do not remove extra bags but having said that they have not emptied the bin at all during this time.
“There are wasps and flies now.”
The ‘constantly full and over flowing’ bin on Northcroft Road was the subject of a volley of complaints to the council to come and empty it.
Now the council says it has done so, and will continue to ‘monitor the situation’.
“We will continue to monitor the situation,” said a spokesperson, directing folk to reporting an issue using an online form.
“However, a polite reminder to everyone (residents and businesses) that if you see the bin is overflowing please do take your rubbish home with you or find another empty bin
Overflowing dog bins are now getting people hot under the collar.
“Why are they not getting emptied?” asked Thatcham resident Kath Little.
“We now have a new WBC. Can they please make this a priority as it’s an environmental health hazard.
“Lots of villages residents are getting annoyed about this problem.”
Meanwhile, the newly-elected council leader Lee Dillon (Lib Dem, Thatcham North East) has echoed the ‘take it home’ stance taken by the council.
“As a dog owner myself, I emplore residents to take their dog poo home with them to dispose of safely if the bin is full,” he said.
“They can also use any other bin as dog waste isn’t considered dangerous any more.”
