Improvements being made at former "inadequate" pre-school in Calcot

Beansheaf Community Pre-School, Charrington Road, run by a voluntary parents committee, was considered to be providing inadequate early year’s provision by Ofsted when it was inspected in September.
A report compiled by inspector Melissa Cox read: “The provider is in breach of a number of legal requirements, including the failure to implement a mobile phone and camera policy; follow rigorous food handling procedures or manage behaviour appropriately.
“Staff do not have a secure understanding of child protection or reporting procedures [which] means that children’s safety is not sufficiently promoted.”
Staff were dealt a set of targets to improve standards at the nursery, including to implement policies to check the identity of pre-school visitors, to train staff on safeguarding procedures, on the use of mobile phones and cameras, on behaviour management and on recording information about other persons who have parental responsibility for each child.
An unannounced visit to Beansheaf Pre-School in October found efforts to improve were inadequate. A subsequent visit in November found improvement efforts were satisfactory and in January inspectors found that a safeguarding procedure had still not been implemented when necessary. It was therefore considered by Ofsted that staff at the pre-school had not taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
However, at its most recent monitoring inspection on April 28, staff were considered to have worked effectively with management to make the required improvements.
A letter to the pre-school, published on the Ofsted website, read: “Staff now have a clear understanding of the procedures that should be followed if they have concerns about the welfare of a child in their care.
“New children were observed to have settled well. Focused adult-led activities are now carried out to promote children’s individual learning.
“Parents are now given written information each week that informs them of what their child is learning and how they can support their child’s learning at home.
“Children’s welfare and safety is promoted.”
Ofsted will next visit the pre-school for a full inspection at a date not yet confirmed.
