In quite a spin over world record attempt
Thirteen members of Spin City studios, based at Greenham and Brimpton, joined more than 100 schools from 21 countries in the event to raise money for their chosen charities around the world.
The women, who had to perform a six-minute routine, now face an anxious wait to see if they have been successful in breaking the world record, set in 2006, and the result will be announced at the World Pole Sports Championships later this year.
Before it is announced, the International Pole Sports Federation needs to collect all the footage and paperwork from those who took part, which will then be passed to the Guinness World Records in April. The result will be based on the number of people taking part for six minutes.
Dancer Kerry Palmer, who took part in the attempt at Greenham, said: “We had been preparing for this event for a few months before, raising money, putting in extra rehearsal time learning the routine and we even did a bake sale on the day to raise that little bit extra.
“It was an incredible day for everyone who took part and those who came along to support us. Let’s just hope we did it.”
Member and instructor at Spin City in Brimpton, George Cross, added:“Six minutes might not sound long, but dancing for six minutes continuously is very tiring, we were knackered by the end of it.
“It’s great to be able to raise money and at the same time raise awareness of pole fitness.
“Some people hear the words pole dancing and think of strippers, but it’s a serious competitive sport and is a really good cardio workout.
“The day went really well, everyone enjoyed themselves and fingers crossed we have managed to get the world record. I think we could have done enough.”
The women raised more than £1,300 for Southampton Hospital neurology department as one of the Spin City instructors received treatment there.
The person who raises the most will receive two free tickets to the World Pole Sports Championships and £100 to spend, while the group to get the most people performing will receive a free ticket for all who took part to the WPCS14 qualifiers, plus £100 to spend on transport. Every entrant will receive a printable certificate of participation.
