Also this week, statistic revealed by the Department for Education show that the attainment gap between children from poorer households and those form more affluent West Berkshire families is the fourth worst in the country.
Liberal Democrats are now calling on the Tory-run West Berkshire Council to take action, with the figures showing that only 25.8 per cent of children eligible for free school meals in the district’s secondary schools achieved five A* to C GCSE grades in 2012, compared to 62.4 per cent of all other pupils.
The figure is three times lower than schools in Kensington and Chelsea, in which 76.4 per cent of pupils eligible for free school meals were achieving the same grades.
In other news, a hotel and travel website has said that international singer, Beyoncé's appearance at Newbury Retail Park last week increased people's interest in staying in the town by almost 50 per cent.
Hotels.com has said that after Beyoncé was seen at Next and Mothercare, searches for the town grew by 48 per cent in a day.
Meanwhile, Thatcham’s community heroes had their efforts recognised this week with the town's annual civic awards.
There was an award for a former mayor who has undertaken numerous voluntary roles for more than 45 years, one for a resident who set up a charity and one for a woman who has helped with a charity for 16 years.
