In this week's Newbury Weekly News

While the district is still falling below the national rate of 68.1 per cent of results ranking at A* to C, West Berkshire schools have bucked the trend by increasing the number of the top grades, including in English and mathematics, from 57.2 per cent last year to 61 per cent this summer, compared to a decrease nationally of 1.3 per cent.
Also this week, tributes have been paid to the chairman of East Ilsley Parish Council who died of a heart attack aged 45.
Gordon Allsop has been described as “an engaging, loyal and humorous” man and “one of life’s givers”.
In other news, Newbury’s historic Michaelmas Fair at Northcroft Park has been cancelled.
West Berkshire Council announced yesterday (Wednesday): “The cancellation was mutually agreed between (the council) and the Showman's Guild of Great Britain, who organise the event.”
The decision was taken because of flood allevation works in the Northcroft area.
Meanwhile, Northbrook Street hosted the international Strongman competition on Saturday, which saw 10 teams of men battling it out for the title by lifting extremely heavy weights, attracting crowds of up to 600 people at a time.
There are hopes to make this an annual event.
As always, there’s also a roundup of the week’s entertainment and sport, and of course this week’s £25 free fuel giveaway.
All this plus more in the Newbury Weekly News, on sale every Thursday.
