In this week's Newbury Weekly News

The parish council applied to take over the Grade-II listed tower for community use in April using Government powers.
But the battle for control isn’t over yet as they have to provide written proof to the district council by January 24 that funding will be in place.
Also this week, a Newbury woman has been left devastated after heartless burglars stole two gold rings left to her by her late father.
Sarah Double, who also had cash, other jewellery and laptops stolen from her Pound Street home, is offering a substantial reward for the safe return of the rings.
In other news, local people have been paying tribute to former South African president, Nelson Mandela, who died last week.
The Newbury Weekly News has spoken to people out on the street to find out their reaction to Mr Mandela’s death as well as a Wash Common man who lived in South Africa for three years during the 1970s.
Meanwhile, West Berkshire continued to bask in a festive glow as Beenham, Pangbourne, Thatcham and Theale all switched on their Christmas lights.
Families turned out in the hundreds to spread the festive spirit and support their communities and many children’s faces also lit up when Father Christmas dropped in on the district for a visit.
As always, there’s also a roundup of the week’s entertainment and sport, and of course this week’s £25 free fuel giveaway.
All this plus more in the Newbury Weekly News, on sale every Thursday.
