In this week's Newbury Weekly News
In the first, a dying woman was found in an alleyway off Andover Road, while in the second, the body of a man was found in Herewood Close.
Also this week, parents attempting to cut costs by dodging peak-time holidays have had their plans scuppered, as West Berkshire Council reveals that more than 120 fines have been issued to those who have taken their children away during term-time.
Of these, seven families have, or are set to, appear before the courts and face fines of £1,000 and a criminal record for not paying the initial cost.
In other news, Vodafone is looking to increase car parking capacity at its Shaw headquarters by 12 per cent by adding 277 new spaces.
Five existing car parks will be extended, subject to planning permission being granted, to cater for an increased number of employees and visitors since the car parks were built in 2003.
Meanwhile, a former pupil at The Hurst, Melissa Gibbons, proved that it takes more than beauty and brains to be crowned Miss Berkshire as she vowed to raise funds for disadvantaged children and armed forces charities at the final last week – and is now in the running for Miss England.
The competition was a double success for the area, with the title of first runner-up going to 19-year-old Wash Common resident Kiran Williams.
As always, there’s also a roundup of the week’s entertainment and sport, and of course this week’s £25 free fuel giveaway.
