In this week's Newbury Weekly News

Gordon Smith, aged 90, who served in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War spoke of his part in the landings and his tearful reunion with his mates and memories.
In other news, plans for a psychiatric intensive care unit for emergency assessments of patients at Thornford Park Hospital will go ahead, despite safety fears from councillors and residents over the height of a fence surrounding the facility.
Also this week, a magistrate has branded the lack of a prisoner escort service at Newbury’s courthouse an embarrassment.
Doug Porter, presiding magistrate last Thursday, June 5, indicated he and colleagues were considering sending repeat offender Colin Null into custody.
But the clerk explained they would have to ask the 26-year-old, of no fixed address, to wait in the building while a prisoner escort was sent for.
In other news, Two representatives of Mortimer Village Partnership were invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden party last Tuesday (June 3), after the community group was notified it had been awarded the South East Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – to be officially presented by the Lord Lieutenancy later this year.
As always, there’s also a roundup of the week’s entertainment and sport, and of course this week’s £25 free fuel giveaway.
All this plus more in the Newbury Weekly News, on sale every Thursday.
