Also this week, the Government’s decision to launch air strikes against Islamic State targets has met with mixed reaction.
The MPs for Newbury, Reading West and Devizes all voted in favour of the strikes, saying that IS had to be stopped.
However, Wokingham MP, John Redwood, and local peace forum founder Shahzad Nadeem questioned the strategy.
Meanwhile, CCTV could be installed at Victoria Park’s revamped cafe when it opens next year, prompted by the spate of arsons and antisocial behaviour in the park in recent months.
Newbury Town Councillors said that, while initially they were unsure about installing CCTV in a park, they hoped it would act as a deterrent, and believed it to be a necessary measure.
In other news, an ice bucket challenge and woman sipping coffee whilst wearing a wedding gown were some of the more unusual fundraisers for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning (WBCM) in Newbury and beyond last Friday (September 26).
A host of local businesses, schools, residential homes and shops alike offered home-made cakes, tea and coffee, boosting funds for Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest annual fundraiser for the charity, which provides support for those diagnosed with cancer, from help with money worries, to advice about work, someone to listen, along with support from Macmillan nurses.
