In this week's Newbury Weekly News
How has your child’s school done? We have the full list of each of the district’s schools for you to see how well they have performed this year.
Also this week, West Berkshire Council voted to change its documentation on the Sandleford development site after it came to light that landowners intended to bring forward separate applications.
If approved, the reworded planning document, which has now gone out to public consultation, will mean that only one planning application for the 2,000 homes can be submitted, as originally intended and to avoid “piecemeal development”.
In other news, developers at Newbury’s Racecourse Development are looking to vary the terms of their original agreement which guaranteed the completion of a “crucial” bridge at Hambridge Road before going any further with the project.
The original condition outlined a cap of 250 homes until the bridge was completed. Now, David Wilson Homes has submitted a further application for 421 homes at the site before the bridge is built.
Meanwhile, Newbury basked in the warmth of community and lantern light when the town’s annual lantern procession marched to the Market Place on Sunday.
Hundreds of families showcased their home-made lanterns, including fish, doves and Darth Vader, to the 3,000 strong crowd. Were you and your lantern snapped by our photographer? Find out in today’s paper.
And also this week was the Hungerford Extravaganza. We were there…were you? If so, we might have snapped you. See inside for lots of pictures of the seasonal fun.
In this week’s First World War supplement, we look at the Christmas Truce, when British and German troops exchanged festive greetings instead of bullets in 1914, as experienced by local soldiers.
We also look at the impact of the war at home and the families missing their sons at Christmas.
As always, there’s also a roundup of the week’s entertainment and sport, and of course this week’s £25 free fuel giveaway.
Also with this week’s paper is your free copy of our monthly magazine Out&About, which is celebrating all that is great and Scottish to mark Burns Night. You can also read of Ellis Barker’s journey back in time as she got on board Cathedrals Express steam engine Oliver Cromwell.
