The figures also showed an increase in arson and racially aggravated crimes, as well as a decrease in vehicle crime, and overall marked the lowest crime figures for the district in 15 years.
Also this week, a need to allocate more gypsy and traveller pitches in the district has prompted West Berkshire Council to issue a call for anyone with a suitable site to come forward.
Current council policy acknowledges the necessity of finding 20 new travellers’ sites by 2027 – four of which need to be allocated within the next five years.
In other news, A seven-year-old West Berkshire schoolgirl has spoken of her surprise after unearthing a suspected phosphorous bomb from the Second World War while on a family holiday in Norfolk.
May Archibald-Green found the device a foot below the surface at Holkham beach with a metal detector that was given to her for her seventh birthday.
The beach was cordoned off by local police and coastguards for around an hour to allow investigations to take place.
Meanwhile, plans to amalgamate two over-subscribed doctors’ surgeries into one base at Strawberry Hill House passed its first hurdle when Newbury town councillors voted to support the scheme.
Pressure on space and existing facilities at St Mary’s Road Surgery and Northcroft Surgery, which between them have in the region of 21,000 patients, has prompted plans to move into one, larger centre.
