Inches Yard shops targeted in break-ins

Thieves smashed door of two shops owned by same people in the early hours of this morning

TWO new Newbury businesses were burgled in the early hours of this morning, with extensive damage caused to the property.

The two businesses – Lunch Express and ladies boutique Lily, both in Inches Yard – are both owned by the same people, but police say they do not believe the owners were specifically targeted.

One of the owners, Christine Black, said: “The police appear to have arrested someone, but they don't seem to think we were targeted.

“They just smashed in the doors, one set of doors were literally smashed in half. There is glass everywhere but we are not allowed to clean up yet, because forensics has yet to investigate the scene.

“A small amount of cash has been stolen and a bit of merchandise, but we are insured. What is more frustrating is that both businesses are new and we could lose two days of trading over this.”

Thames Valley Police spokesman Adam Fischer confirmed the arrest, saying: "The 40-year-old man from Greenham was arrested shortly after 3am after officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress in Inches Yard, Market Street."
