‘Indignant shopper’ shops brazen thief at supermarket

Daniel Terrance Davies, who is on licence after early release from a prison sentence, was detained outside Sainsbury’s in Kings Road, Newbury, and arrested, the court was told.
Helen Waite, prosecuting on Thursday, June 5, said: “A witness saw him walk past the self scan tills with a trolley full of items and leave without paying. They alerted staff and he was arrested, later giving a ‘no comment’ interview to police.”
Mr Davies, aged 61, of Mill Lane, Newbury, admitted stealing £290 worth of goods on May 2 this year.
Mike Davis, defending, said: "In October 2012 he was imprisoned for drugs offences with a number of others. He was released in October last year and has had problems with his benefits ever since.
"He is on licence at the moment but has been attending appointments with probation as he should, so there are no plans to recall him to prison for this.”
Magistrates made Mr Davies subject to a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay a statutory surcharge of £15.
