She was speaking at the opening of an inquest into the tragedy, at Reading Town Hall on Tuesday, July 22.

Mrs Connor said the incident happened at Warren Greatrex Stables in Uplands, Lambourn, on Saturday, May 10.

She added: “Mr Moffatt was identified by the trainer Warren Greatrex.

“Following a post mortem, the cause of death was provisionally recorded as compression of the neck by ligature.”

Mrs Connor offered condolences to Mr Moffatt’s family and friends and adjourned the brief hearing while a full inquest is arranged.

Mr Moffatt had worked at the yard for nearly a year.

The alarm was raised when he failed to report for work, prompting colleagues to search for him.

After the tragedy Mr Greatrex released a statement, saying: “It’s hugely upsetting.

“He was a great member of the team with a great sense of humour.”
