Installation of speed limiters causes chaos
However Wiltshire Council engineers have taken action to try to alleviate the problem, after complaints were made.
The works include installation of reflective bollards and ‘pinch points’ to slow traffic as it enters the village on Ermin Street from the east and passes the playground area, as well as slowing vehicles travelling the other way.
Work began on May 12, following years of lobbying by the parish council, the Traffic Calming Working Group and the Community Speed watch Team.
Resident Tom McGowran said: “Day one resulted in a four, or even a five-fold increase in traffic in Manor Lane. Horse boxes, tankers, HGV lorries and a huge increase in cars using the lane were experienced throughout the day.
“Most drivers were considerate in keeping their speed down but there were a few that seemed to think it was a rally race course.
“I found all the road closure signs were in place but were being ignored. I stopped a few cars and asked they if they had seen the signs for the closure, all said they had not.”
The parish council also took up the matter with the district council and engineer Kevin Bishop wrote to Mr McGowran: “We have instructed the contractor to put out signs at Manor Lane stating ‘Access Only’ or ‘Residents only’ so this should deter road users from using this route.
“Unfortunately we cannot prevent road users from ignoring the diversion route signage. However, it is anticipated that the road closure will not be required for the full three weeks, so any inconvenience can be kept to a minimum.”
While acknowledging the speedy response, Mr McGowran said: “There are still a number of delivery vans and cars driving fast up and down the lane.”
Contractors have already constructed the buildouts but further road closures will be necessary while trenching and ducting work for street lighting is completed.
