"Irreplaceable" gargoyles stolen from Newbury building

Opportunist thieves are believed to have climbed scaffolding at 10 Bartholomew Street which was in place to paint and restore the roof of the property following a lead theft several months ago.
The offenders may even have dressed as workmen to steal the orange-brown clay gargoyles, which were taken along with forty clay roof tiles, according to police.
The incident occurred sometime between 5pm on Monday, September 17, and 5pm on Saturday, September 22.
The owner of the building for the last 13 years, hairdresser Kerry Allen, from Newbury, said she was dismayed to find out the statues had been taken.
“We had lead stolen a couple of months ago and were going through the process of having the roof repaired when it happened.
“The workmen had scaffolding up and it looks like whoever has stolen it has climbed up there. They were probably taken to order, I’ve phoned around dealers and yards but nothing, we’ll probably never get them back.

“I’ve got old photos of the street from before the time cars could get down, and this has ruined that street scene, it will never look the same again. It was part of old Newbury and now it has gone.
“It is so frustrating and annoying to have to go through all this again.”
Police are appealing for anybody who has information about this incident or who saw any suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
The force said witnesses might not have realised that the items were being stolen due to the scaffolding and attire of the suspects.
Anyone with information should call the Thames Valley Police 24-hour non-emergency number 101, or anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
