Man who brought a stop to The Bowler's Arms half price ladies nights speaks out
The man who made a Wash Common pub aware of the potential illegality of its half price ladies nights has spoken up about why he did it.
His intention was to try and get a half price night for everyone, regardless of sex, as he believed the half price ladies night is unfair towards men.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been a patron at The Bowler's Arms for more than 20 years and personally knows the general manager, Richard Hayman.
Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News, he said: “It’s not fair that men pay more than women. It is unfair and unlawful.
“It is not fair and not right that someone can get a half price meal and I cannot because I have a penis.”
The man thought that those who had left angry comments on both the Facebook post from The Bowler's Arms and on the story from Newbury Today had jumped to far-flung conclusions on why he spoke up against the half price promotion.
He informed the pub about the ladies nights’ potential illegality by commenting on The Bowler's Arms Facebook page under a pseudonym.
The man, who stated he was a feminist, said that he and his wife found many of the Facebook comments to be misogynistic and he wanted to see the end of the ladies night so that everybody would be treated the same.
He said: “Whether it is a one night thing, a one month thing or a one year thing, it is about treating everyone equally.”
He wasn’t offended by the comments, but he thought that people weren’t able to debate the topic sensibly.
He noted that one’s sex, under the Equality Act 2010, is a protected characteristic that cannot be changed or discriminated against, and so the ladies night was a direct violation of that.
“Men get a raw deal these days. Men are seen as pariahs,” he said.
When he discovered that a half price promotion for everyone on a Wednesday night might be coming into effect in the next few weeks, he was delighted.
He said: “It is a win-win for everyone. Surely that will generate more business.”
