Netflix’s The Crown’s Camilla actor, Olivia Williams, one of the judges at The Queen’s Arms Winter Game Fair, which drew the crowds with cookery competition, dog show and country crafts

Never mind the weather - it’s a Winter Game Fair, after all!

Downpours and gales didn’t deter crowds of Lambourn Valley residents from flocking to the event at The Queen’s Arms in East Garston on Sunday (November 24).

As well as game stalls, cookery demonstrations, country crafts and even a dog show, there was fierce competition in a country cookery competition.

Tables were heaving with produce including an impressive selection of game pies, sausage rolls, preserves, breads, cakes and fruit liqueurs.

The judges certainly had their work cut out for them.

The panel included actress Olivia Williams, who plays Camilla in the hit Netflix royal historical drama The Crown, Deborah Puxley from Welford Park, owner of the high end Boisdale restaurant chain Ranald McDonald, Kate Hall… and the Newbury Weekly News’ Hungerford area reporter John Garvey.

Among the winners was an impressive gala game pie by Nicola Ripley.

Organiser and licensee at The Queen’s Arms, Freddie Tulloch, declared the result a resounding success - even though his own culinary genius did not make the grade with the judges this time around.

He vowed to up his game next year.

Mr Tulloch said: “Thanks to everyone who braved the elements - we had an incredible array of culinary delights and terrific looking dogs in atrocious conditions.

“Special thanks to our judges and massive congratulations to Casey Nield, whose pigeon sausages won the Best In Show.

“Special mention has to go to Richard Beeson for his scotch eggs and our own Queen’s team for their award winning pies.

“Also to Ed Pownall for winning the dog show.

“Thank you also to Property Vision for sponsoring the event.”

Left over produce was later auctioned off.

The event raised £916 for The Country Food Trust.
