It's here! Hungerford's new footbridge arrives
A crowd of onlookers who had gathered despite the hour burst into spontaneous applause as a huge crane completed work on the project which was first proposed more than 70 years ago.
Diostrict councillor for Hungerford, David Holtby (Con), said: “Though it will be a few more weeks before the bridge is ready for use, our thanks are due to the district council’s highways and transport department and their contractors, particularly Griffiths Civil Engineering, for delivering the project on time and budget, with skill and minimum disruption.
“We are also grateful to our council colleagues of both parties, who were understanding of Hungerford’s need in these difficult financial times. This long-awaited bridge will offer a safe link between the north and south of our town for pedestrians and wheelchair and scooter-users alike. It will benefit locals and visitors and stands to provide a welcome boost to trade.”
