Historic fair returns to Northcroft Park
NEWBURY’S historic Michaelmas Fair returns next week.
More than 20 rides and 50 stalls are expected to roll up in Northcroft Park for the fair, organised by the Showman’s Guild of Great Britain.
The fair will be opened by the mayor of Newbury, Howard Bairstow, at 6pm on Wednesday, October 14 and will run until October 17.
Wednesday will be half-price night and a firework display is planned for 9pm on Friday.
The fair dates back to the 17th century when shepherds and maids turned up to seek work in the town, but is now held as a funfair.
Last year’s fair drew complaints from residents who said show vehicles churned up the park, as well as complaining about noise and litter caused by the event.
