Jealous Lambourn man Jordan Geraghty sentenced for ‘brutal’ attack on partner

A horse trainer and amateur boxer, fearful his partner was sleeping with his brother, launched a brutal attack which scarred her for life.

Jordan Geraghty rained punches on Jessica Crayton, leaving her with a broken collarbone and a serious gash on her leg.

She has since had to move from the Lambourn area and quit her dream job, Reading Crown Court heard on Friday (December 13).

In the dock was Jordan Geraghty, who admitted causing her grievous bodily harm in Upper Lambourn on Thursday, May 23.

David Dainty, prosecuting, said the 26-year-old, whose address was given as a flat in Old Manor, Upper Lambourn, had been in a relationship with his victim, adding: “They were both horse trainers in the Hungerford area.”

However, he added, Geraghty would become jealous if she talked to other men and would frequently question where she had been.

Geraghty then became convinced she was sleeping with his brother, Darren, the court heard.

Mr Dainty said Geraghty hurled a coffee table in her home, smashing the glass, and then punched Ms Crayton to the ground before stamping on her.

He then rained punches on her head before taking off his shoe and striking her with it, the court heard.

Mr Dainty said: “She noticed a large cut on her leg from the broken glass on the floor; he shouted that he would kill her and punched her twice more to the head.

Eventually Ms Crayton was able to flee and call an ambulance.

She was taken to hospital and treated for a broken shoulder which will never fully heal, the court heard.

Mr Dainty said: “She was very fearful of repercussions from Mr Geraghty and his family but eventually she told police and he was arrested.”

Ms Crayton has been left with a lump on her broken shoulder and said, in a victim impact statement: “This has had a huge impact on my life…I’m too frightened to continue living in Lambourn.”

The 29-year-old said she felt forced to move away and had to give up the work she loved for a job she did not find as fulfilling.

Anton Kaminsky, defending, said his client had no previous convictions and had expressed “genuine remorse”.

He added: “He regrets his part in this deeply distressing incident; Your Honour has read the pre-sentence report and I’m not sure there’s anything else I can say.”

Judge Paul Millard told Geraghty: “Ms Crayton suffered a nasty, permanent injury.

“Every time I read the facts of your case and it’s put into words, I’m shocked by the brutality of it...it was an awful, awful attack and left her with a lifelong reminder of the injuries you caused.

“It’s as serious as they come; were it not for your age and lack of convictions, and what I believe is genuine remorse, I would be sending you to prison today.”

Geraghty was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for 18 months,.

In addition he was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid community work and to pay £500 costs.

Finally, Geraghty was made subject to a three year restraining order.
