John Lewis at home confirms for Parkway

The retailer will bring 160 jobs to the area with its new 'at home' store in Newbury town centre

THE proposed John Lewis at home store has finally been confirmed for Newbury's Parkway development.

The store, which will become a second anchor at the 475,000 mixed-use retail and residential project, was given the green light by West Berkshire Council as part of plans to reconfigure parts of Parkway, which were approved by district councillors back in January.

However, the store has only confirmed today (Friday) that it will open at the development next year, taking over a 40,000 sq ft unit over two floors which will bring 160 jobs to the area and will focus on furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical and home accessories.

Managing director of John Lewis, Andy Street, said: “We continue to believe that there is a strong opportunity to grow our business in the home and electricals sector and are delighted to be bringing a John Lewis at home to Newbury town centre.

“Although there are a number of John Lewis department stores within an hour's drive of Newbury, research has shown that customers would prefer greater convenience and ease of access to our inspiring products, great value and exceptional service, which our town centre ‘at home' shop will provide.”

The John Lewis at home store, which follows in the footsteps of similar stores in Poole, Croydon, Swindon and Tunbridge Wells, is set to open in Newbury in 2012.

It will join Debenhams, Topshop, H&M, New Look, Lakeland, Jones the Bootmaker, Paperchase, Fat Face, Costa and Barclays at the Newbury development, which is set to open in October.
