Keep an eye on your valuables, warns bag-snatch victim

Newbury pensioner loses hundreds of pounds in cash after bag is snatched in town centre

A PENSIONER is warning others to keep a close eye on their belongings after her bag was taken from her shopping trolley while she was in the town centre.

Doreen Bishop said she was shocked to discover
her handbag, containing around £700 in cash, as well as items of jewellery, was missing after she had been browsing in a charity shop in Market Place on Saturday.

Mrs Bishop, who lives in Ecchinswell, said the bag was taken from her shopping trolley after she and her friend had walked from Camp Hopson’s car park to the Cancer Research UK charity shop.

Mrs Bishop said: “I know for certain that I put my handbag in my trolley

“Looking back now I remember moving the trolley and it just felt light but it wasn’t until we left the shop that I realised my bag was gone.

“It was terrible. It was just a shock.”

The pensioner, who celebrated her birthday in April, said she still had £300 of her birthday money in the handbag as well as money to tax and insure her car.

“I’d been keeping my birthday money in case I saw something nice that I could treat myself with and my car tax and insurance are due at the end of the month.

“It’s a bit much when you’re a pensioner and it’s going to be difficult because of this, but there you go.”

"I just hope to warn others to keep tight hold of their bags so the same thing doesn't happen to them."
