Kennet Cassette brings newspapers to life.

Talking newspaper keeps the partially-sighted informed.

Kennet Cassette, the Talking Newspaper for the partially-sighted in West Berkshire, came into being in 1976. It was founded by Newbury Round Table, who came up with the idea, and with the help of the Newbury Weekly News, fund-raised to make it a reality.

Articles are selected each week from the Newbury Weekly News, and read onto a tape, which is then copied and distributed to about 150 partially-sighted people, who can keep up to date with the local news at their leisure.

A team of about 70 volunteers is involved, on a rota basis, and one of the original 1976 Round Tablers, Peter Dann continues as Chairman of the organisation after nearly 40 years. Sue Campbell has been a volunteer editor for over 25 years. Our picture shows some of the team celebrating the 1000th edition in July 1995; the 2000th edition came out in 2014!

Tongue in cheek, Peter Dann, now retired, says he is determined to keep the service going at least long enough to benefit from it himself when he needs it!
