Kennet School pupils are champion citizens

National Citizen Service awards Thatcham school

KENNET School has been officially recognised as a champion school for the work of its pupils in the community.

The school was awarded Champion School status in recognition of the enthusiasm and dedication of its students who participated in this year’s National Citizen Service (NCS) summer programme.

Pupils spent their summer giving back to the community, working with local charities and partner organisations for causes, including the Canal and River Trust and West Berkshire Museum.

Kennet headteacher Paul Dick was presented with the award in a school assembly on Tuesday last week.

He said: “Congratulations to NCS, a wonderful organisation which provides so many opportunities for pupils at Kennet and beyond.

“Of course, I am proud of my pupils for flocking to take up these opportunities to develop their own talents and help those less well off than themselves.

“NCS and Kennet are a powerful partnership and the trophy, naming us as a Champion School, is proudly displayed for all to see. Well done NCS and well done Kennet.”

The Kennet champions joined thousands of NCS graduates across the UK who completed the part-residential programme run by the The Challenge – the UK’s leading charity for building a more integrated society and the largest provider of the NCS.

NCS relationship manager, Zoe Clark, said: “We have been working with Kennet School for two years now and have been overwhelmed by the support and contribution from both the school, students and staff.

“This award is a recognition of their positive contribution to Newbury.

“As the student alumni continue to grow, they should feel proud of the positive legacy they leave among their younger school peers.”
