Ketamine driver Bethan Markfort causes M4 chaos near Membury

A MOTORIST who had TEN times the specified limit of ketamine in her system stopped dead in the middle lane of the M4.

Other vehicles, including HGVs, were forced to serve to avoid colliding with her.

The incident happened between Membury and junction 15 on Thursday, April 18.

Witnesses called police and Bethan Markfort - who had driven from Surrey - was arrested.

Tests later showed she had consumed more than 10 times the specified limit for driving of the Class B controlled, dissociative anaesthetic which can cause bizarre distortions of reality and render users unable to walk or talk.

Markfort, of Reigate in Surrey, admitted drug-driving when she appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 7.

She was fined £1,200.

In addition Markfort was ordered to pay £85 costs plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £480.

Finally, she was banned from driving for two years.

Afterwards, roads policing officer Tom Webster of Wiltshire Police said: “Markfort’s actions were incredibly reckless and dangerous and put a number of lives, including her own, at risk.

“It is extremely fortunate that having stopped in the second lane for unknown reasons, the drivers behind her were able to react in time to take evasive action, potentially averting a serious collision.

“There can be no excuse for driving under the influence of drugs, let alone the distance Markfort travelled with the amount of ketamine she had in her system.”
