General Election 2024: Newbury’s Liberal Democrat candidate, Lee Dillon, receives show of support from Layla Moran, following recent Sir Ed Davey visit
Newbury’s Liberal Democrat candidate has received yet another show of support from a key figure in the party, writes Jemima Kerr.
Layla Moran joined Lee Dillon on the campaign trail on Saturday.
Ms Moran is the Lib Dem spokesperson for foreign affairs and international development and is was the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon until the election was called.
This support comes at a key time in the campaign with the election just a week away, where in Newbury polls are suggesting that it is likely to be either Lib Dem or Conservatives who win the seat.
In a bid to encourage Newbury voters to vote yellow, Ms Moran described Mr Dillon as “a true local champion”, who “has a strong record of fighting for the best interests of local people” in his 17 years as a councillor.
She highlighted his “support for the children on free school meals during the pandemic” and his reversal of “Conservative cuts to the Readibus service”.
Ms Moran said she was pleased to spend her time canvassing for Mr Dillon as he is “a strong candidate fighting for local communities” and she said she thought “Newbury is likely to turn yellow again with the support of Labour and Green voters voting tactically”.
This was not the first visit from a high-profile Lib Dem politician to Newbury in this election period. Recently Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey and his ‘Yellow Hammer 1’ battle bus visited the town to rally support for candidate Mr Dillon.
