Kintbury author Robert Harris unveils textile hanging at Newbury library

.
The bestselling author gave a talk about his latest novel An Officer and a Spy, after first unveiling the work by artist Wendy Lloyd, which engaged hundreds of local people in thinking about their community, inspired by their visions of Newbury in 2099.
Now on permanent display at the library, the hanging was commissioned for the Wish you Were Here? project run by West Berkshire Council’s Library and Arts and Leisure Services, backed by Arts Council England Lottery Funding.
As part of the same project, an installation by artist Graham Tunnadine incorporates 520 postcards, designed by individuals and community groups, illustrating what West Berkshire means to them.
At the event, West Berkshire Council chairman Keith Chopping and West Berkshire executive councillor for culture, Hilary Cole, presented prizes to Graham Slater and eight-year old Freja McGourty from Pangbourne for their postcard submissions.
Mrs Cole said:“Robert Harris has spoken several times at our libraries and is always very interesting. I am delighted to be part of this event and be able to witness such a huge range of talent in one place."
During the evening, which rounded off LibraryFest2014 – a seven-week celebration of arts activities and performances in Newbury, Berkshire Youth, a new book group for young
people aged 11 to 16 was launched.
