Knackers yard plans withdrawn

The application, submitted by J Passey and Son, sought to move the yard from the Turnpike industrial estate in Newbury to the vacant Wessex Saw Mill in Great Shefford.
The application had raised concern among animal welfare charities, businesses and residents over the smell that the yard would produce and the impact this would have on animals at the National Animal Welfare Trust center at Trindledown farm, as well as race horses in training at nearby stables.
There were also concerns that the application form had not been filled out correctly as there was no mention of an incinerator being placed on the site despite the applicant, Edward Saunders, stating at a Great Shefford parish council meeting that one would be installed.
However Mr Saunders, said he had no intention of putting a rendering plant on the site.
The application also said that the site was not in an area at risk of flooding, despite the site and surrounding areas having been affected, and residents feared that contaminated water could seep into the water table.
