BBC's Fake or Fortune? inspires Lambourn author's first thriller

Upper Lambourn writer Robert Cort has recently published his first book - ‘The Opportunity’. It is a thriller and the first in a collection of five books he has written which chart the life, adventures and career of Ian Caxton.

Ian is a senior manager at Sotheby’s, the world-renowned auction house. After successful career moves to Sotheby’s branches in New York and Hong Kong, Ian is now based in London and earmarked for the top position. However, following a chance meeting with Andrei, a very rich and charismatic Russian art dealer, based in Monaco, suddenly Ian is seriously reassessing all his plans and ambitions. Even his marriage is potentially being threatened.

In ‘The Opportunity’ Ian is introduced to a new side of the art world. A world of serious wealth, heart pumping adventures and the dark side of the fine art business. The big question is, will Ian take ‘The Opportunity’? And if he did, what would the consequences be, not only for him, but also for his wife and colleagues?

Having enjoyed writing stories at junior school, Robert continued to write short stories as a hobby. However, following retirement from a career in the commercial insurance world and a move to the Lambourn area nearly four years ago, he decided to use the winters productively to see if he could write a full length novel.

"My inspiration came from a combination of a fascinating holiday visit to Moscow, buying a book about The Kremlin, reading an article about the secret lives of wealthy Russians living quietly in London and from being an avid viewer of the television programme Fake or Fortune?," Robert tells N2.

"As I’ve always enjoyed reading ‘page turners’ and escapism books, that is the style I have adopted."

‘The Opportunity’, is published by Authoright / Clink Street Publishing, which specialises in supporting first time authors. It is now on sale in either paperback or ebook formats.

Robert says reaction to The Opportunity has been positive, with people really enjoying the book and being especially surprised with the twist at the end.

"As a result, my publisher now plans to release the second book in the series early in 2022," he says.

"For anyone who buys my book I hope you enjoy reading about Ian Caxton’s adventures, his personal mental conflict and the challenges of his opportunity. An opportunity that potentially could realise for him a personal wealth beyond his wildest dreams."
