Large power cut affected hundreds of homes

Engineers struggled until after 11pm to fix problem

SWATHES of Newbury, Hungerford and Lambourn were without power yesterday evening (Tuesday).

A spokeswoman for the Southern, Alexis Hall, said a "fault to the overhead network" had affected 1,054 customers.

The power went cut at 3.57pm.

She said engineers were working to fix the problem and the vast majority of clients should have power restored by 7.30pm.

However, she added: "Where the area has been damaged, they have been able to isolate that area but, while they carry out repairs, 41 properties in that isolated area will remain without power until around 10pm.

"We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused and would like to thank all those affected for their patience."

In fact, some homes remained without power until after 11pm.
