Leader of the opposition Ross Mackinnon selected as Conservative candidate for Reading West & Mid Berkshire

The Conservative candidate for the newly-formed Parliamentary seat of Reading West & Mid Berkshire has said being selected was like “a dream come true”.

West Berkshire councillor Ross Mackinnon will be standing for the Tories in his home seat in the upcoming general election thought to be taking place sometime later this year.

Mr Mackinnon is a ward councillor for Bradfield as well as the leader of the opposition in the Lib Dem-led council.

He announced the news on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account last night (Thursday).

In response to his selection, Mr Mackinnon said: “It’s a huge honour to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for my home constituency, and I’m so grateful for all the members who have put their trust in me to do so.

“The most important quality any MP can have is a commitment to public service.

“I’ve been a councillor for Bradfield at the heart of the new constituency since 2019, as well as serving as an executive member and now group leader.

“I love living here and am personally invested in making our constituency an even better place to live for every resident – regardless of how they usually vote.

“I can’t wait to get out there and listen to residents’ views and concerns.

“I’m a familiar face to many of my ward residents but now need to hear from all over the constituency.”

He also said that he would be “emphasising traditional Conservative values” as part of his election campaign.

He added: “I want to see a thriving local economy (including our crucial rural businesses), low taxes as soon as public finances allow, excellent public services, support for those who really need it, protection of our beautiful countryside, and safe and secure communities.

“I feel hugely honoured and I’m really excited to get started.

“We want to make sure that our part of Berkshire stays blue.”

Due to the recent constituency boundary changes that split the former Newbury seat into two, the Conservatives formed a new constituency association for Reading West & Mid Berkshire last September.

“We’ve been out campaigning since the new association was formed, so it’s not that we’re just getting started, it’s just that now we have a face to put to the campaign,” Mr Mackinnon said.

He said the other candidates he was up against for the Tory candidacy were “outstanding” and that “any one of them would have made a good MP”.

He concluded: “From a personal point of view, one of the best things about [the selection] is that it is my home seat.

“It is a dream come true. I can’t think of anything better than standing for election, hopefully being elected and being the MP for the place where you live. It is outstanding.”
