Learn more about local history from local experts

Newbury History Day returns

LEARN more about Newbury’s history from local experts in a series of talks next month.

Newbury’s local history society, Newbury District Field Club, is holding its fourth annual Newbury History Day.

This year’s theme is Aspects of the History of Speenhamland and four local historians will deliver six talks on the subject; ranging from the area at its peak during the coaching era, notable residents, pubs and breweries and the changing face of buildings over the years.

There will also be short talks explaining Speenhamland’s historic relationship with Newbury and the much-maligned Speenhamland System.

Speakers are local historians Phil Wood and David Peacock, and former West Berkshire Museum curators Jane Burrell and Tony Higgot.

Tickets cost £10 from the Corn Exchange or £12 on the door.

The event will be held in St Nicolas’ Church on Saturday July 2, from 10am until 4.30pm.
