Legion's wartime exhibition a popular lunchtime retreat
On every Saturday throughout 2014, the Newbury Royal British Legion will host an exhibition of memorabilia and artefacts from the First World War, and visitors will also be able to pick up a spot of lunch relevant to the era.
Usually a members only club, the exhibition will be open to members of the public every Saturday between 11.30am and 3pm, at the Legion clubhouse in Pelican Lane, Newbury.
The event is already attracting a number of guests, with both food sales and footfall increasing by 20 per cent on Saturdays since its launch last month.
Items on show include a photograph album created during the war by the grandfather of a Newbury resident and a selection of letters saved by another.
Medals, certificates and newspapers and magazines from the time are also on display, and the Legion is appealing to local people who may have items at home to donate them to the exhibition. They will be returned once the exhibition finishes later this year.
The vice-chairman of the Newbury Legion, Graham Hillyard, said “It’s in memory of all those hundreds of thousands of people who gave their lives for freedom.”
