Letter writing desk fit for the king sold for £5,000 at Newbury auction

The items, a cloisonné bronze writing set which included a letter rack, inkwell, roller blotter, pen tray, paper knife and a stamp box, were given to the monarch by his brother the Duke of Windsor in 1937, the year after he abdicated to marry divorcee Wallis Simpson.
An online buyer from California successfully bid for the items on Thursday which were valued at between £5,000 and £8,000, said Special Auction Services who hosted the event.
Each piece is patterned in an art nouveau floral design created in turquoise enamel, and individually bears the name ‘Bertie’ - King George VI’s nickname.
Inside the stamp box lid is a historically poignant inscription: With love. From D and W. “There, but for the grace of God…..”
Following his death in 1952 his wife Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, gave the set away, apparently due to her dislike of its association with the Windsors.
She presented it to the late King’s Equerry who had served the King throughout his reign.
The seller of the items chose to remain anonymous.
