Lib Dems reveal prospective parliamentary candidate for north west Hampshire
North West Hampshire Liberal Democrats have selected local barrister Alex Payton as their candidate.
The selection followed a vote of party members at a meeting in Andover Guild Hall on Friday.
Mr Payton, aged 40, is an Oxford graduate who specialises in civil law.
A Newbury town councillor (Lib Dem Victoria), he has previously served as councillor and mayor in Thatcham.
In 2010 he was also the Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate for Havant.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr Payton said he was proud to represent the Liberal Democrats and their successes in coalition.
Achievements such as the £12,600 tax threshold, the triple lock on pensions and the pupil premium, he continued, had made a real difference to local people and would not have been introduced without the Lib Dems in government.
Mr Payton was keen to work with local councillors dealing with the problems of the large-scale housing developments in the constituency, improving road and transport links and ensuring local people have a voice in Parliament.
Hampshire county councillor, Warwick Lovegrove (Lib Dem, Tadley and Baughurst), said: “Alex is an excellent candidate with extensive knowledge and experience of local campaigning who will put the people of north west Hampshire first.
“We all look forward to working with him in the forthcoming general and local election campaigns.”
The current MP for north west Hampshire, Sir George Young (Con), announced his intention to stand down in March.
