Liberty is head and shoulders above the rest
Eight-year-old donates £1,200 and 10 inches of hair to charity
A BRAVE eight-year-old girl from Newbury proved she was head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to fundraising, by having more than 10 inches of hair snipped off for charity.
Liberty Watters decided to undergo the radical chop in order for her long, brown locks to be made into wigs for children undergoing treatment for cancer.
Liberty, who turned eight recently, will be donating her hair, along with £1,200 that she has raised, to The Little Princess Trust charity.
The Little Princess Trust will use the funds to buy wigs, which cost £350 each, if a suitable one can’t be found within the charity.
Following the hair cut, proud mother Sam said: “She loves it. I got a little bit emotional, which set her off a little bit, but other than that she was fine.
“I think it was hard for her to sit still for that long but she did really well. And she’s absolutely thrilled with the money she’s raised.
“With Gift Aid, she’s on more than £1,200 so she’s thinking about it in terms of how many children that will help.”
The Woolton Hill Junior School pupil decided she wanted to do something to help children undergoing cancer treatment and had set herself a £700 target which she smashed within 24 hours.
Sam added: “I’m always proud of her but I just can’t believe a little person can be brave enough to do something like this.
“Obviously for a little girl her hair is a massive deal, but she just said to me, ‘I want to do it’.
“Cancer is one of those things that affects people you know, and she’s had friends and family who have been affected.”
After getting used to her new haircut over the weekend, Liberty is now in the process of growing her hair back so she can make another donation to the charity.
