Library hosts From Newbury With Love
.
A 21-strong audience gathered to listen to former local teacher, Mike Braide and local author Nick Channer, who together gave an introduction to and recitals from the book,
, containing letters penned towards the end of the Cold War years.
Co-authored by Anna Horsbrugh-Porter and Marina Aidova, the book reveals the letters of Harold Edwards, of Ashmore Green, who in 1971 responded to an Amnesty International letter writing campaign.
His letters transformed the lives of a family living in Moldavia, part of the Soviet Union.
Letters sent between the two families until 1986 provided a unique documentary of this period of Soviet Union history.
Library supervisor, Yvonne Aubrey, said the evening proved thought provoking and continued:
“Mike was brilliant in reading in character. It brought the book alive!”
Copies of the book are available at Newbury library, in the wharf.
