Library opens new lounge
West Berkshire Council chairman, Peter Argyle, officially opened a new lounge at Newbury library on Thursday
LOUNGE lizards should head for a relaxing new space at Newbury library which was officially opened this week.
The Carnegie Lounge - a new space for studying, reading, or relaxing, on the first floor - was officially opened by the new chairman of West Berkshire Council, Peter Argyle (Con, Calcot) on Thursday (May 26).
Mr Argyle joined pupils from the Willows School, who heralded the opening with a trumpet fanfare and provided music for the occasion.
“The library is delighted to be working with The Willows school on this project and nine splendid pieces of their artwork are now on display,” said West Berkshire Council spokesman, Phil Spray.
The room was funded by developer's contributions (section 106 or S106) in recognition of increased demands on local services created by new housing and increased population.
Developer's funds were previously used to refurbish the library entrance area and layout.
West Berkshire Council's executive councillor for Culture and Leisure, Hilary Cole (Con, Chieveley) said the new space, to also be used to display artwork, was a “welcome addition” to the busy and thriving library.
“Customers will be able to relax with a hot drink and a book or magazine, or study using the free laptop facilities or Wi-Fi. Occasional activities will also take place in the room," said Mrs Cole.
Facilities in the lounge, a former meeting room, include: easy chairs, study tables, electricity supply for laptops, Wi-Fi and a hot drink vending machine.
