Lid to be lifted on Berkshire's new signature dish at county show

Local chefs stirring up local, seasonal dishes in competition

Lancashire has its hotpot, Yorkshire has its pudding, Cornwall has it pasties, but Berkshire awaits a signature dish – to be unveiled at the Royal County of Berkshire show in September.

Local restaurant and pub chefs have received invitations from the show organisers to enter a competition to create a tasty signature dish that puts Berkshire on the UK food map.

The dish can be a main course, starter or dessert, but should include local, seasonal produce.

“With top quality ingredients like pork from Berkshire pigs, Red Windsor cheese and beer from local breweries, the chefs will not be short on ideas,” said Newbury & District Agricultural Society chief executive, Daren Bowyer.

“We ask only that the ingredients are fresh and that they are sourced within the county.”

The process will involve each chef preparing a sample of his dish for a small group of judges – including The Woodspeen Michelin star chef John Campbell – who will visit for a tasting ahead of the show.

The winner will then be invited to cook their dish at the show on Sunday, September 20 – where the official announcement will be made on Berkshire’s new signature dish.

Other highlights of this year’s two-day show include world-class quad bike stuntman the Kangaroo Kid topping the bill in the main arena, a Shetland pony Grand National, music from the Waterloo Band and Bugles of the Rifles.

There will also be ‘have a go’ opportunities, from skateboarding and tractor driving, to an inflatable army assault course and a family trail, offering the chance to spin wool, groom donkeys and pan for gold.

More than 2,000 animals will be competing for a place in the Grand Parade of Livestock, alongside displays of vintage machinery and countryside crafts areas.
