Literature at lunchtime

Historical novelist Stella Tillyard at The Watermill this afternoon

Stella Tillyard, described by Simon Schama as ‘dazzling…a phenomenally gifted writer' makes her fiction debut with Tides of War, a dramatic and compelling novel set in Regency London and in Spain during the Peninsular War and she is the next Watermill book club guest on June 10. Stella's previous books Aristocrats: Caroline, Emily, Louisa and Sarah Lennox and A Royal Affair: George III and his Troublesome Siblings made the best seller charts. Tides of War displays all the narrative talent of Stella Tillyard's best-selling Aristocrats, as well as her genius for period, atmosphere, character and description. She carries us deep into the anguish of men at war, the taste of freedom offered to the women left behind, and the burning drive of émigrés in a society on the cusp of change. Infused with passion and desire, Tides of War also delves into the challenges of married life. As the cast of characters pursue their destinies, facing hope and heartache in equal measure, this stunning novel brings alive the thrilling lost world of the past.
