Tilehurst pupil represents her country at Invictus Games in Germany

A local girl has received a prestigious national honour.

Year 13 Little Heath pupil, Amaani, has been invited to serve as a brand ambassador for Great Britain at this year’s Invictus Games in Düsseldorf — one of only two from the UK.

Already an active figure in Reading, where she holds the position of deputy chair in the Reading Youth Council, 17-year-old Amaani noticed an opening for the position.

After a successful application, Amaani dedicated her summer holidays to promoting the games, setting up stalls in Reading Town Centre, distributing merchandise and encouraging individuals to support the athletes by signing yellow ribbons.

She flew out to Germany on Friday, August 8, accompanied by fellow British brand ambassador and the Mayor of Reading, Tony Page.

She will be attending the opening ceremony and volunteering support for the games.

Prince Harry started The Invictus Games in 2014 after visiting the Warrior Games, a competition for wounded servicemen.

Reflecting on her role, Amaani said: “It would be great for people to show their support by watching the games.

“Hopefully by seeing the incredible strength shown by athletes from across the world, it will inspire people and show that you can really do anything, and be anyone, even when such unexpected things may occur.”

At the beginning of the new academic year, Amaani approached her headteacher, David Ramsden, in a bid to involve the school community in this inspiring endeavour.

The yellow ribbons convey support to random athletes from around the world and have now been signed by a large majority of pupils and staff from Little Heath School.

Amaani joins eight esteemed brand ambassadors from various corners of the world, including two from Reading and two from Düsseldorf. The pair have maintained a sister city relationship for more than 75 years.
