Local schools tackle sexual exploitation in Newbury play

The Crime Reduction Drama which is held each year at Newbury’s Corn Exchange asked Year 9 pupils to put on a performance around the theme of “Staying Safe – Protecting yourself from vulnerability online and the potential of child sexual exploitation” on Thursday.
Each school gave a 15-minute performance to a panel of judges which included representatives from the Watermill Theatre, West Berkshire Council and Thames Valley Police.
Assistant Outreach Director at The Watermill Theatre Heidi Bird said: “It was a privilege to watch these young people perform with such confidence and enthusiasm. They all approached the subject in an interesting, dynamic and informative way, resulting in performances that were both very enjoyable and meaningful to watch.”
The student-led plays were this year aimed at highlighting the dangers of surfing online, creating friendships in a virtual environment and spotting the early signs of someone who may be a victim of child sexual exploitation.
West Berkshire Schools Officer PC Tim Emery said: “This year we picked a particularly difficult topic around child sexual exploitation but all the schools rose to the challenge.”
