London to Paris cycle ride in three days
THREE West Berkshire friends are preparing to embark on a cycle ride from London to Paris in memory of their relatives.
Mark Thompson, aged 35, from Hungerford, but now living in Wiltshire, Matt Savory, aged 36, of Hungerford, and Roger Davis, aged 42, of Newbury, are hoping to finish the 320 mile ride in three days, starting on April 6.
The trio are taking on the challenge in memory of Mr Thompson’s late father, Ian, and Mr Davis late father-in-law, Mike.
All proceeds will go to the Pancreatic Cancer UK and the Newbury and District Cancer Care Trust, who cared for Mr Thompson senior when he was diagnosed with cancer.
Mr Thompson junior said: “We're under no illusions, it is going to be a tough three days in the saddle, cycling hundred plus miles for three consecutive days, but we are confident it will be worth the aches, pains and saddle sores.
“From an endurance and stamina point of view it’s going to be tough. We’ve also got time pressures on the first day because we’ve got a ferry to catch.”
Mr Thompson junior has also organised a charity football match in memory of his father, who played for Hungerford Town Football Club during the 1970s and ran a youth side at the club.
The match, between Hungerford Juniors 'Old Boys' and Hungerford Town Veterans XI, is being held at Hungerford Town Football Club on May 6, with a 2pm kick off.
After the game there will be an auction, including signed football memorabilia from clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Reading.
Mr Thompson junior, who has already raised more than £6,000 for The Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust , added: “The cancer care trust were fantastic when they looked after my dad so we wanted to do something to say thank you.”
